Write better cooking steps

Make your instructions easier to follow with a simple structure.

Write better cooking steps

Great steps make the difference between “I saved it” and “I cook it weekly.”

A simple structure that works

  • Prep (what to do before cooking)
  • Cook (the main sequence)
  • Finish (taste, adjust, serve)

Tips for clear steps

  • Start each step with a verb: Chop, Mix, Simmer, Bake.
  • Put temperatures and times in the step:
“Bake at 180°C for 25 minutes.”
  • Keep steps short. If it feels long, split it into two.
  • Call out optional steps clearly:
“Optional: add chili flakes at the end.”

Example (style)

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Whisk wet ingredients in a second bowl.
  4. Combine, pour into pan, bake 25 minutes.
  5. Cool 10 minutes before slicing.
